Health & Safety:

Excellence in safety performance in the construction industry is mandatory for a successful general contractor. Workplace Health and Safety is a vital component of the construction process All our employees are trained in WHMIS, site specific industry hazards and our Corporate Health & Safety Policy prior to commencing any work in the field. In addition, all Maaten's office personnel, field forces and sub-contractor field forces complete the safety training provided by the Sarnia Lambton Industrial Educational Co-operative (IEC).

In addition, for the last five years, Maaten has been a member of the WSIB's (Workplace Safety and Insurance Board) Safety Groups Program, as founded and sponsored by the Ontario General Contractors Association (OGCA). The Safety Groups program provides members with a network of firms who share the common goal of reducing injuries and illnesses. Together, Safety Group members pool resources, share best practices and help each other develop and manage effective health and safety programs. Along with improving workplace safety, they can also reduce their WSIB premiums and earn financial rebates. In 2008, Maaten shared in the rebate program that paid out over $487,000 to firms participating in the Safety Group.

Maaten already had a comprehensive safety manual, so as a member of the Safety Group program, we were in a position to play a leadership role in this forum and assist those companies who were just starting to create their own manuals.

In recognition of their outstanding performance for achieving a zero injury frequency from 1989 to present, Maaten has received a "Distinguished Achievement in Health and Safety" award from the OGCA.
